The phrase DARVO may feel unfamiliar but the experience of DARVO in healthcare is not. Staff, patients and families can experience this specific type of harassment in which the perpetrator denies the accusation, attacks the victim or works to undermine or question their credibility as a witness, then the perpetrator reverses the narrative to indicate they themselves are the victim of baseless accusations. This can lead to victims feeling unsafe in coming forward and allows the existing culture of protecting the perpetrator to persist.
